European Chemicals Agency

ECHA is the regulatory authority responsible for implementing EU chemicals legislation, compiling information on hazards from chemicals including biocides, provides information on their safe use and addresses chemicals of concern.

It is responsible for:

• The Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR), which ensures that sufficient information is compiled about biocides to enable consumers to use them safely.
• Registration under the REACH Regulation of information on the hazards, risks and safe use of chemical substances that companies manufacture or import.
• The Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (CLP) which introduced into the EU the globally harmonised system for classifying and labelling chemicals.
• The Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Regulation, which sets guidelines for the export and import of hazardous chemicals.
