Use of Fertilisers

In line with the rest of the food industry, suppliers to the chilled food industry are required to comply with strict controls on the use of all forms of fertilisers including farmyard manure, compost and sewage sludge. Only farmyard manure that has been subject to approved treatments to reduce pathogens is permitted. Manures and slurries may not be applied directly to growing salad, fruit crops, or near a water source and the use of sewage sludge is not permitted on crops used by this industry. Rules are set out in CFA’s Microbiological Guidance for Growers.
